What Does the United Methodist Church say about Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) People?

LGBT people are active participants in the United Methodist Church. They're Sunday School teachers, lay speakers, organists and choir directors, leaders, committee members, daughters and sons, people sitting in the pews, and clergy. They're part of the foundation of faith that has brought our church to where it is today. Official United Methodist Church statements often don't take that into consideration.

The official statements that relate to LGBT people fall into several basic categories. Beyond being statements approved by the General Conference and printed in the Book of Discipline and elsewhere, each of these statements has connections to real human beings. Each declaration has an impact on the lives of LGBT people and their families in our churches.

In this area you can review and consider the official United Methodist statements on human sexuality, equal rights regardless of sexual orientation, marriage and celebrating same-sex unions, church membership and eligibility to participate, clergy, and use of United Methodist funds.
