Equal Rights Regardless of Sexual Orientation (¶162J)

In the United Methodist Book of Discipline, Paragraph 162J affirms that basic civil rights and liberties are due to all persons and states our commitment as United Methodists to uphold those rights regardless of people's sexual orientation. It recognizes the clear justice issues involved in protecting the claims of people who have shared material resources. It goes on to express support for ending violence against all persons regardless of sexual orientation.

If United Methodists speak up in support of equal rights and against violence, what impact could this have on LGBT people and their families?

  • When gay and lesbian people lose their jobs because of their sexual orientation
  • When the family of a gay man who has just died comes to "settle his estate" and totally ignores the needs and claims of his partner, who shared his love, life, home, and finances for over 20 years
  • When officials downplay the latest violent attacks just because they happen near the "gay bar" in town
